The Powhatan Historical Society, the citizens of Powhatan, and everyone who visits this site, owes an immeasurable debt of gratitude to Sharon Lee Nowery, Catherine Lynn Nowery and other members of her team, for the uncountable number of hours which were expended to visit the cemeteries, take pictures, transcribe tombstone information, edit and compose the “TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS OF POWHATAN COUNTY, VIRGINIA, Vols. I, II, III, IV. It is indeed an honor to further highlight their efforts by putting this information on the internet for the use and enjoyment of everyone interested in the rich history of Powhatan County, Virginia.
    We have now added, and continue to add, many additional cemeteries, additional burials to existing cemeteries, pictures of loved ones, obituaries and other biographical information.      The above headstone picture of James Poindexter is of the only person buried in the Powhatan County Courthouse complex. The Powhatan County Historical Society indicates they have very little information on this person except for the fact that he was Clerk of the Court from 1802 until 1816. If anyone out there has any additional information on this person or his family, please contact the Powhatan Historical Society. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

We have an update on Mr. Poindexter! While researching and entering the "Powhatan Selected Marriages", James Poindexter's name was encountered a multitude of times, mostly as a marriage witness or the bond holder, which was probably one of his duties as 'Clerk of the Court'. However, some other interesting information was also gleaned.

James Poindexter married Ann Williamson, daughter of George Williamson on November 15, 1802. James & Ann had a least two children (daughters), Frances L. and Mary P. Poindexter.

Frances L. Poindexter married James Robertson Jr on November 22, 1823 and the marriage record indicated that James (father) was deceased and Ann was listed as her guardian which usually indicates that Frances L. was still under 21 years of age.

Mary P. Poindexter married Robert P. Batte on May 17, 1847 and the marriage record indicated that she was the daughter of James (dec) and that she was of legal age.
