Spencer John Hobson, a son of the late John Hobson and Hattie Taylor Hobson was born in Powhatan County, VA., March 7, 1908.
He attended the public schools in Powhatan.
At an early age he was converted, baptized, and joined the Little Zion Baptist Church where his membership remained.
In 1932, he was joined in wedlock to Miss Bessie Palmore. From this union two children were born.
In 1944, Spencer was called to serve his country in the United States Navy receiving his honorable discharge in 1945.
In 1952, he was joined in wedlock to Mariana Saunders, a widow with five children whom he reared as his own and from this marriage two daughters were born.
His places of employment included hotel work in New York, the Virginia Department of Highways, and Goodyear Tire Co. in New Jersey from which he retired in 1973.
After returning to Virginia he enjoyed farming and yard work.
Spencer was a devoted husband and father. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Two weeks ago he became ill and departed this life on Friday, August 9, 1991, at McGuire Medical Center, Richmond, VA.
He leaves to cherish fond memories his wife Mariana, 5 daughters, Shirley, Virgil Anne, Linda, Jeanne and Carolyn; 4 sons, Spencer, Jr., Irving, William and Akwasi; 18 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Alberta and Bessie; 4 daughters-in-law, Mary, Joyce, Wendy and Janell; 2 sons-in-law, John and Rick; 3 brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
And sailed quietly out to sea,
Someone dear, has sailed away
In calm serenity.
But God has promised of greater joy
Than earth could have in store,
But God planned a richer life
Beyond the unseen shore.
