Bernice Stovall Payne

First Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery

        Bernice Stovall Payne entered into eternal rest on Spetember 7, 1999, in Richmond, VA. She was born on November 28, 1925 to the late King John Marshall Stovall and Jerdina Funn Stovall of Powhatan, VA.

        Bernice joined the 1st Antioch Baptist Church at an early age, where she attended until failing health prevented her from continuing. She was educated in the Powhatan School System and graduated from Armstrong High School in Richmond, VA. She attended Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA. She was employed by Thalhimers Department Store for 31 years, and retired in 1990.

        She was joined in wedlock to the late Edwin G. Payne of Crozier, VA. She is survived by her devoted family, 2 daughters; Janice P. Brown and Sheila P. Vaughan, 3 grandsons; Tony M. Brown, Gerald C. Vaughan, Jr., and Lonnie E. Brown, 2 great-grandsons, Darian X. Vaughan and Derrick M. Brown; a devoted aunt, Mary Fox, devoted cousin, Lucy Fox, son-in-law, Phil Brown, brothers-in-law, Emmitt Willis, Bernard Payne, Aubrey Payne, and Andrew Snead; sisters-in-law, Florence Payne, Ruby Trimble, Theresa Snead, and Lucille Payne; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, including lifetime friends, Pauline and Dave Trerrant, James E. Knight (Sheila's fiance'), Earline T. Fenner, Richard Winston, Daveda Pearson, and Willie Shelton.

He knew that you were suffering
He knew that you were in pain
He knew that you would never
get well on earth again
He saw the road was getting rough
and the hills were hard to climb
so he closed your weary eyelids
and whispered, "Peace Be Thine."
It broke our hearts to lose you,
but you did not go alone,
for part of us went with you,
the day God called you Home.
